HONORS ENGLISH 2089
Since Intermediate English (ENGL 2089) is required for students, I decided to take advantage of the honors section that was offered to meet both the English requirement and Honors Experiences requirement during the fall of my second year. Taught by Professor Suzanne Wendell, the class of about 25 students met for an hour on three different days each week during the semester. Each class was a discussion on an assigned article and topics were widely varied, ranging from more current topics such as the Trayvon Martin case to the discussion of comics as a literary form. Our discussions always covered many viewpoints and helped bring out opinions. The course required 3 papers to be written- the first a personal essay about our own literary journeys, the second a discussion of genre, and the third a research paper about a “discourse community”. For the first essay, I wrote about the evolution of my own love of writing and of words. For the second, I contrasted the play and movie of Les Miserables. For my final paper, I wrote about the community of people who are interested in organic and natural alternatives. This involved interviewing local shop owners and consumers and led to some surprising revelations about how those categories are actually defined. I enjoyed writing the research paper the most because I was very interested in the topic; as a college student I want to try to make healthy choices. This course surpassed my expectations as I approached it as a necessary requirement, not something I would enjoy taking. In the end, I did appreciate all the discussions that we had and the chance to invest my time in something outside of my design courses
