DIVERSE COMMUNITIES
This year, I found my place in three communities at UC- my studio group, the Darwin T. Turner Scholars, and my group of friends from my residence hall. I am blessed to be a part of these strong communities and know that they are there for support.
After spending endless hours in studio day and night, Monday through Sunday, I found easy camaraderie with the people that I was working alongside, who felt the same frustration and joy working on projects. I know that I would have gotten very discouraged this year if not for the wonderful studio members who could entertain me at 7 in the morning when I was panicking about finishing a project in time for critique . Although I will not be with the same group of people next year in studio, I know that we will see each other around. It is reassuring to know that I will be in a studio every year and not face the next 4+ alone. Although more of an independent worker in high school, I realize now that feedback, especially in the form of criticism, is extremely helpful in the iterative process. Although I know that the final design decision is always mine to make, I highly value the thoughts of my fellow designers.
I am also very thankful to be part of the Darwin T. Turner scholars family, a diversity group. This year, I went to meetings every Monday with the rest of the freshman turner scholars, where we had guest speakers and did activities. Although I still do not know every single Turner scholar because of the size of the group, I believe I have made great friendships within to "rep the T"! At our last meeting this year, we wrote down what we wanted to take with us into the new year and what we wanted to leave behind. This exercise was very reflective and a great example of how the group cares about our well-being. As a Turner Scholar, I plan to continue encouraging and celebrating diversity on campus during the next couple of years.
I also really enjoyed living in my residence hall as a freshman due to the close friends I have made in it. Most of us will be living in the same hall next year as well! This community was very supportive of my project-heavy major. My roommates and hall friends were very accepting of all of my architecture supplies sprawled over a corner of the living room, and made sure to check in on me when they knew I was staying late and leaving early for studio, or if I hadn't returned from it at all. They have definitely helped me balance studio with other important functions, such as sleeping and leaving.
